The Benefits of Having an On-Campus Coffee Program

Written by Heartland Reps | Feb 6, 2023 2:02:05 AM

Students and staff are always looking for an extra kick of energy in high school or college. Not only does a caffeine kick help wake them up, but it can also keep them going or just make them happy. So heading to that popular coffee shop is often on their things to do on the way to class. But what if they were able to get that espresso or latte on campus? Saving them time and helping the school's program make some extra money.

Why a Coffee Program in School?

The idea of having a coffee program on a school campus may seem unusual, but this is something that has been around for a while. It's also not something only private schools can provide. In fact, a lot of higher education students expect coffee at their schools.

There are several reasons why having a coffee program in school is so important.

Increase School Cafeteria Profits

In an era where many school food programs are having difficulty making ends meet, coffee programs provide a unique opportunity. Research has shown that having a coffee program in school can potentially increase cafeteria profits by up to $900 per week. This could provide the school with a much-needed cash stimulus, increasing the flexibility that the school has in its budget.

Enhance Authorized Programs

There are some who are concerned about increasing the sale of caffeinated beverages. But on-campus coffee programs in high schools aren't something prohibited or restricted under USDA rules. In accordance with the Smart Snacks School Program, schools don't have to worry about running afoul of any regulations by opening a coffee bar in school.

Increase Dairy Intake

Students must make sure they consume enough dairy every day if they want to build strong bones. Teens should be consuming approximately three cups of milk every day, but there are far too many teenagers who are falling far short of this goal. Because coffee bars require milk, this could be a great way to encourage students to consume more dairy.

Increase Student and Staff Happiness

It has also been shown that having access to a much-needed morning cup of coffee can improve someone's happiness. Therefore, instead of dealing with grumpy teenagers walking the hallways, provide them access to a coffee bar, and put a smile on their faces. Of course, when the students are happy, the teachers are happier as well. And they love coffee too!

Another Teaching Outlet

Finally, this could also provide the school with another teaching outlet. With access to coffee kiosks, it might be possible to give students an introduction to the business world. Therefore, with access to the right technology, schools could turn coffee programs into another educational opportunity for their students.
